Academic Courses

Academic Courses are designed for those students who wish to study various academic subjects with the eventual aim of attaining a place at a university, in the UK or overseas.

At The Abbey College, Academic Courses are divided into three main bodies. Our younger students (minimum age 14) concentrate on preparation for GCSE/IGCSE examinations. At the higher level (minimum age 16) students work towards either the traditional 'AS' and 'A' level qualifications or the specialist University Foundation Programmes, both of which lead directly to university entry.

Course Routes

The College operates a three-term academic year, running from September to June. Students begin courses in either September or January. April entry is available for pre-sessional English courses. Entry at other times is strictly at the Principal's discretion, normally subject to additional tuition.

The value of a UK university education is renowned worldwide. Not only can students look forward to brighter career prospects but also the degrees can be attained in a shorter timeframe than in most countries, due to three year undergraduate and one year postgraduate courses.

Teaching

The College prides itself on its small class sizes and high-quality teaching. On average there are just 7 students per class. This allows each teacher to come to know each student in detail, constantly assessing strengths and weaknesses and ensuring no student should fall below expected standards.

Many students are away from home for the first time, and we understand that help and guidance are essential for them to develop a mature attitude to study, both at the college and later at university. Our teachers are experienced in teaching overseas students, and personal tutors are assigned to help students outside the classroom. Every student's timetable is individually prepared. Some teachers are available during the evening homework sessions for extra assistance if required.

All this contributes to the excellent academic performance and university success of The Abbey College students.
